Succinate What is it?

Succinate, otherwise known as Vitamin E or Alpha-tocopherol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be found in several different forms. It is an antioxidant that helps to protect your body's cells from the effects of "free radicals" (by-products of the bodies metabolism).

Where does Succinate come from?

Vitamin E can be taken in supplement form available in capsules, tablets or powder from. It can be purchased at a local pharmacy or health food store and no prescription is required. The food that a person consumes is also a source of vitamin E. Green, leafy vegetables, nuts, and vegetable oil are all good sources of vitamin E. A study preformed by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that most Americans do not receive that recommended daily allowance of vitamin E simply from their diet. However another study by the Institute of Medicine stated that the method by which food is cooked was not accounted for in the previously stated study and that when food was cooked in oil, the daily recommended intake was sufficient from one's diet. It does caution, however, that those who are on a low-fat diet may need to take the supplement form of vitamin E.

How will Succinate impact my health?

Some research states that the supplement form of vitamin E may help to prevent or delay the onset of coronary heart disease and may also prevent the formation of blood clots. Many studies have been done on this subject and the findings are arguable. Consult your doctor about the correlation of vitamin E and heart disease. Other inconclusive studies have been preformed to indicate some correlation between vitamin E intake and the prevention of cancer and cataracts.

What precautions should I be aware of?

Vitamin E taken in extremely large does, more than 1000 mg per day, could lead to bleeding problems, since vitamin E is a know anticoagulant. Studies have shown that taking vitamin E in moderated doses (530-800 mg per day for up to 4 months) has no significant impact on one's general health.
